Dos Reviews…os

Unless The Wrestler is now playing near you, there’s really not much to see this weekend.  I wish I had a review for My Bloody Valentine 3D but since Lionsgate is apparently afraid of screening horror movies for critics (even when the word from people who have seen it is mostly positive), I haven’t seen it yet.

Defiance (6.1 out of 10)

Best Trailer of 2009 (so far)

If just your trailer has me laughing hysterically, then yeah, I want to see your movie. The fact that it’s by The Whitest Kids U Know makes it even better.

2009

I think the reason people like the New Year so much is because it symbolizes potential.  Anything is possible because it’s like the slate is clean.  Of course, everything is still in play: your job, your relationships, and who you are as a person and what you can do differently.  You can change your life just as easily on June 14th as you can on January 1st*.  The only thing that’s changed is the calendar.  And maybe that’s why so many resolutions get dropped.  Potential is easy.  Wishing is easy.  It’s the follow-through where it gets tough.  We’re at the point where New Year’s resolutions exist for the purpose of being broken.  And then eventually you either make them as a joke or you don’t make them at all because you don’t want to change or you just want to spare your self the disappointment.  I get that.

As for me, I keep making resolution.  The one resolution I want to keep more than any of the others is weight-loss.  I know that’s the most cliche of them all but I figure I can keep it since I didn’t start this year.  I started at the very end of last year.  And furthermore, I’ve made a promise to my brother.  I can break a promise to myself (or is more often the case, procrastinate on a promise) and lie to a personal trainer.  But my brother was good enough to take the time out of his schedule and show me how to life weights and not hurt myself and what kind of exercise regimen is best for me.  And my goal isn’t to reach a target weight because losing 70 lbs is overwhelming.  It’s just to see some kind of difference by the end of May.  To look at myself in the mirror and see a thinner person looking back at me.  To just know that I stuck with something difficult and got tangible, positive results.

I have other resolutions (clear my Netflix queue, be more social, write a screenplay) but it’s time to complete the one to lose weight.  I’ve been overweight for too long and I didn’t do anything about it because I thought it didn’t matter because even if I lost the weight, I would still have physically repulsive qualities so why bother.  But I just have to take it one step at a tme and I have a Hot Fuzz t-shirt I’d really like to wear but it’s one size too small.  I’ll be sure to keep you all updated as the year progresses.

*I have just been informed that June 14th is Flag Day, so plan accordingly.
